Metelec’s business is all about sustainability. The rapid expansion of electrification across many sectors plus the conversion to green and clean energy generation and storage requires copper and copper alloy. We believe our role is to supply products in the most sustainable way possible.

The world is facing a range of environmental and social challenges, including climate change, pollution, and social inequality. Metelec takes our responsibility in addressing these issues and contributing to building a more sustainable future for all extremely seriously.

Contributing to a sustainable future

Metelec’s business is all about sustainability. The rapid expansion of electrification across many sectors plus the conversion to green and clean energy generation and storage requires copper and copper alloy. We believe our role is to supply products in the most sustainable way possible.

Fully recycled

Metelec’s copper is sourced via our parent companies Gindre and UMCOR from a fully recycled source. Large-scale primary copper smelting is carried out by Montanwerke Brixlegg in Austria from a one hundred per cent recycled source. This dramatically reduces the burden of primary mined copper production.

Hydropower reduces our CO2

In addition to recycled materials, hydropower from water running from the Alps helps us deliver the lowest possible carbon footprint of 0.74kg CO2 for every kg of copper produced from cradle to gate. This compares with typically 4 – 11kg CO2 per kg of copper produced via the conversion of mined ore.

Conserving natural resources

Recycling copper has many benefits. It conserves natural resources, as copper is a finite resource and mining new copper can have negative environmental impacts. Recycling copper also requires less energy than mining and refining new copper, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

Helping our supply chain become more sustainable

It’s not just our own sustainability that we take seriously. We are determined to support our supply chain to work smarter.  Increasingly, we are recovering scrap to be returned to our group facilities in France and Austria to be remelted. We are proud to be an active participant in the recycling and upcycling chain. Working smartly together we can be less of a burden on the planet for the production and distribution of our products.

Moving in the right direction

Alongside our approach to sustainable products, we have also invested more than £200,000 in low-emission transport to distribute our products. This is in addition to our all-electric company vehicle fleet.

Investing in the future

Metelec is committed to being the very best supply chain partner we can be. We will work collaboratively with customers to achieve shared goals and create value for our customers.

A new state-of-the-art distribution centre and headquarters reflect our commitment to solid, sustainable growth.

2023 will see Metelec move its operation to a brand-new facility with immediate access to the UK motorway network at junction one of the M54. Rated BREEAM Excellent for insulation and thermal efficiency, we will utilise solar panels for zero carbon manufacturing using our state-of-the-art all-electric CNC machinery.
